Expensive Medicine

I mentioned before that in the last three years I have become adept at dealing with the cost of medical care. Through insurance, hospital programs or otherwise, there are more resources out there than I ever would have known. The unfortunate thing is the need for these programs to exist at all, and for people to have to be so afraid to find the proper care because of billing statements like this (which is for one month of service).

I can’t count how many times I have heard friends or family describe something that clearly warranted a doctor, only to see the fear in their eyes rise exponentially at the mention of going to the hospital. ‘No way, I can’t afford that.’ It’s so ingrained in our minds that health care is a financially crippling that many don’t even want to try, certain that whatever the price will be, it’ll be sky high. To have that immediate reaction is sad.

I want to reach out again and say that anyone living with myositis, chronic disease or just having other issues, please do not sacrifice your health in the face of money. While the financial hit can be frightening, no bill is ever, EVER not worth it when it comes to adding years or months to your life…and what that means for your loved ones. I cannot claim to be an expert or have magic bullet answers, but please reach out to me if I can help point you in the right direction or provide support in some way.

Stay strong, don’t be afraid.
