The Revolving Door of White Coats

Wow is it already Saturday? How strange.

I wrote the other day that I was a direct admit to the University of Kansas Medical Center on Tuesday night. For more on that reasoning, check this post out.

Essentially, while waiting for my next major infusion to start, a combination of infections and myositis flare overtook my current treatment plan. In order to get back on the right track, I needed a stronger blast of medicines that were not entirely smart to take in an outpatient setting. This has largely involved an increase in dosage for my current treatments, stronger and more frequent pain control methods and most importantly an IV dose of steroids several times stronger than typical. This last one has wreaked some havoc but I know the end result is important. For example, two days ago my blood pressure reached 223/113, largely caused by the fluid volume and increase in solumedrol. This had to be reversed with some other IV med. Once I start the infusion of Rituxan, the goal is for my body to be stable enough to give it time to work. I think we’re on the right track.

These sudden jumps in dosages have left me in a bit of a daze, to be frank. I swear it shouldn’t be anywhere close to Saturday afternoon, yet here we are apparently. My days are largely spent holding court with a revolving door of specialists. Some of them are part of my regular care team, some aren’t but the entire situation is a good thing because it allows me a chance to get things corrected in a quick and controlled manner. I’m sure some of you can share in the frustration of having to ‘wait and see’ with new medicine or dosage changes at home. It’ll be cool to go home and be in a good place with everything, minus the waiting.

Everyone is being patient to that end and want me to leave here feeling  better than when I came in. At the end of the day, that’s all I can ask for anyone participating in my care, and it is something that I wish more people could experience. Based on where I am right now, I might be able to head home on Monday. This depends on how I tolerate meds over the weekend, decisions on when to start Rituxan and/or IVIG infusions (they may keep me here longer to do those), physical and occupational therapy consults and also how my psyche holds up after the Elite 8 Kansas game tonight.

For anyone who reads my posts, messages me with questions or just has a kind word…I am always thankful.
